Hardness Testing

Portable, Fast and Reliable

Portable hardness testing provides simple, quick, reliable and economical testing on location. Baker Testing provides portable testing using the dynamic impact rebound method.

Applications for Hardness Testing

Often used for quality control or failure analysis, determining the hardness of metals can provide valuable, non-destructive information about strength properties.

  • Verify conformance to contract, code or specifications
  • Verify proper heat treatment
  • Determine structural integrity and material properties
  • Measure hardness differences or consistency

Hardness testing of metals is frequently required by specifications to help determine properties such as abrasive resistance, brittleness, ductility, yield and tensile strength.

Advantages

  • Portable testing provides easy inspection of assembled machines, steel, cast construction
  • Test marks on metal surfaces are minor
  • Impact direction effects can automatically compensate to allow testing in any position
  • Direct display for instant results
  • Recorded memory for data transfer of test series
  • Rapid conversion to multiple hardness scales by material groups or specified ranges

Portable Test Equipment

The impact rebound method of hardness testing employed by Baker Testing uses a Proceq Equotip © portable hardness test unit. Spring energy in the handheld test device launches a metal ball indenter against the test specimen. As the ball passes through a magnetic coil in launch and rebound, an induction voltage signal is produced that is proportional to the two velocities.

The ratio of impact to rebound velocity, multiplied by 1000 yields a direct hardness value HLD (Leeb Hardness). Conversions from HLD to Brinell (HB), Rockwell (HRB, HRC), Vickers (HV) and Shore (HS) scales are provided from average or individual readings by the push of a button.
